Lakeview is a 12 acre passive park, located at the corner of Ella Ave. and Ontario St. It was constructed in 1978/79 with funding from the City of Sandpoint and a grant from the Soil Conservation Fund. Before it was developed into a park, the property was the site of the Bonner County Fairgrounds. Currently the Bonner County Historical Society and the Sandpoint Lions Club lease space in the park for their buildings and activities. A portion of the park is also developed and maintained by the North Idaho Native Plant Society as a native plant arboretum. In addition, the park has a small house that is maintained by Parks and Recreation and rented to a private party. Lakeview hosts numerous community events, family reunions, and picnics.
In December of 2011, after a one year dog friendly pilot project at Lakeview Park, Ordinance number 1260 was amended to permanently allow leashed dogs ( a maximum of 3 dogs per handler) in Lakeview Park, excluding: the children's playground area, within the fenced tennis courts, and within the boundaries of the basketball court. Dogs are not allowed inside the fence at Memorial Field. The amendment states that owners must remove excrement deposited by their dogs and place it in a sanitary container. The dog handler must also have a plastic bag or other equipment On Their Person to remove his/her animals fecal matter when accompanied by their dog on public property or public easement. Failure to pack a bag or to clean up after ones dog is an infraction subject to fines as provided in Idaho code 18-113A. ($100 fine)
Though not excluded from the Native Plant Arboretum in Lakeview, the City asks that dog handlers Please restrict their on leash dogs to pathways only if they enter the Arboretum. The arboretum volunteers and the City thank you for your consideration.
