In 2011 the First Avenue to Sand Creek Gateway Entrance Project was completed, providing an introduction and access to Sand Creek and long term a pedestrian route to the Selkirk Loop Visitor Center. The Gateway entails a public art entrance off of First Avenue created by Nelson Boren, street-scaping, paths and ramps down to Sand Creek, and a landing that provides access to the water and the boardwalk. The boardwalk was constructed in two phases; phase one from Sandpoint Marina to Bridge Street and phase two from Bridge Street to the Panida Theater. Stained concrete, botanical themed public art, historical photos, a kayak dock and three art benches also enhance the landing and boardwalk.
