Similar to Phase 1 (completed in 2023 from ~ Hwy 2 & Superior St), the second phase of the Division Avenue Corridor Improvement project will improve Division Ave's function as a multimodal corridor by providing better pedestrian and bicycle access to schools, community destinations, and neighborhoods.
Safety improvements recommended in the Road Safety Audit (RSA) and identified in the 2021 Multimodal Transportation Master Plan (MTMP) will include:
-
a traffic calming measure of narrowing the north and southbound travel lanes on Division Avenue.
-
removing the center turn lane before Pine Street
-
revitalization of the east side of Division Avenue with a wider frontage that includes reconstructed sidewalk, planter strip, curb & gutter, and driveway approaches.
This summer, Phase 2 improvements along the east side of Division Ave, from Superior St to Pine St will include:
- new 6-ft wide sidewalk to improve pedestrian access to schools, community destinations, and neighborhoods;
- wider bike lane;
- new planter strip to provide greenspace in alignment with Sandpoint’s Urban Forestry Master Plan and provide snow storage; and
- traffic calming measures to reduce vehicular speed and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Construction is anticipated to begin on Monday, June 8 and be completed by September 2026.
What to expect during construction:
Working hours for the project will be from 7am to 7pm, Monday through Friday. Expect construction-related noise and equipment during these hours.
Please exercise extra caution when traveling near construction zones. Your cooperation in obeying posted signs and flaggers ensures the safety of our work crews and the community.
- Temporary lane, sidewalk, bike lane, and driveway impacts should be expected within and near the project limits. This includes work along Division Avenue between Superior Street and Pine Street, as well as side-street work near Superior Street, Lake Street, and Pine Street.
- Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians should follow posted signs, detours, and flagger directions. Local access to businesses and driveways will be maintained; however, driveways within the project limits may be temporarily impacted for short durations during demolition, temporary gravel driveway installation, and paving operations.
