Second Avenue

Second Avenue

Sandpoint Urban Renewal Agency funded the rehabilitation of Second Avenue within the Downtown District from Main Street to Pine Street. The City of Sandpoint, Public Works Department managed this project and was responsible for the actual design and construction thereof.  The project was completed in June 2011.

Second Avenue is a road redesign with "Green Street" features unique in Idaho. The road is narrower, the sidewalks are wider and bulb outs were built at the intersections in hopes of making the area more pedestrian friendly.

The bulb outs are rimmed with steel for durability, and the soil beneath the sidewalks is specially designed to help trees grow faster, and in such a way that they won't buckle the concrete.

The main improvement was with the storm water management. Rather than fit the street with all manner of pipes and grates to direct water into Sand Creek and Lake Pend Oreille, green strips of trees and planters between the sidewalk and curb handle all the the water management directly by absorption or filtration.
