Resilient Economy

Sandpoint has shown incredible resilience and adaptation over the years.  Historically, Sandpoint’s economy was based on resource extraction and rail.  In the later part of the 20th century, tourism came to dominate the local economy.  While many small businesses cater to this sector today, the last 20 years the city has seen significant growth in technology related industries.  Numerous home grown businesses have developed making Sandpoint increasingly known as a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship.  Aerospace, biomedical and information technology, in particular, have taken a foothold. High tech employers provide high paying jobs that serve a global market.  The result is an increasingly diversified economy that ensures economic stability.  Mayor Rognstad continues to support small business, growing industries and attract new employers to Sandpoint.  By serving the needs of existing companies and leveraging public assets, the City will retain quality employers and attract the right kind of growth and development for a sustainable future.

Responsive Government

Robust civic engagement is an essential component of Sandpoint’s identity.  The City is politically diverse and must ensure that every citizen has easy access to information and opportunity to participate in local government.  With good access to information and good participation, we create good governance.   Mayor Rognstad has led an exemplary initiative to promote civic engagement (link) that has set the bar for the State of Idaho.   He will continue to make this a priority in the future.

Quality of Life

Quality of Life is the foundation of Sandpoint’s success.  It starts with the abundant natural beauty that surrounds this city.  The natural environment and the recreational opportunities that it provides are the very reason most people choose to live here.  It is also the reason businesses choose to locate here.  This environment attracts people that value nature, community and family.  Quality of life underpins our economy, our health and our happiness.  Public resources should be accessible to everyone and offer year round opportunities for recreation and enjoyment.  The natural environment is our number one asset and it should be protected at all costs.  Our success as a city will largely be determined by the degree to which we continue to invest in this asset.

Maintaining a high quality of life also requires that a city is livable.  It must be safe and affordable, offering a variety of housing and transportation options.  It must also offer supportive community features and services that foster civic, economic and social engagement.  A livable city is inclusive of all people and makes for happier, healthier visitors and residents.

Maintaining a high quality of life also requires that a city support a vibrant culture for arts, entertainment, food and learning. Mayor Rognstad continues to create an environment which fosters a vibrant culture, is inclusive, and supports an incredibly high quality of life.
